Freelance writing for beginners can be confusing. However, it doesn’t need to be, and it is one of the easiest ways to earn a living from home because there are a ton of options available to you. And when I say a ton, I am not exaggerating. There are almost too many to list, to be honest, which is why I won’t be listing them all in this post. You can find a more comprehensive list here. Now, on to information which I am sure you are dying to know…pay!

How You Get Paid

First, you need to know that there are two types of writing for pay sites, those that pay per piece, and those that offer revenue share. If you’re a beginner writer, then I suggest looking for sites that pay per piece, because you will learn more and more about writing for an online audience on these sites and make money while doing it. Now, you won’t be making bank from these sites, unfortunately, but everyone has to start somewhere, right? If you were to start out on a revenue sharing site, then you would have to wait for your writing to get a certain amount of traffic before getting paid. With all of the competition out there, you may be waiting a long time for that.

Pay Rates

Most of the pay per piece sites do not offer the greatest rates. Such is the nature of writing on the Internet these days. It’s the tradeoff on having a gazillion sites to write for.

When you see a site that offers you $1 per 500 word article, you have to ask yourself if the research involved in writing a 500 word article is worth more to you than $1. Now, if the pay is $1 per 100 words, then you may (may being the key word here) be able to knock out a few articles in an hour because 100 words is pretty short, if you think about it. And therefore, you may not need to perform research. That makes for short, easy work!

Types of Writing

Most of these sites are looking for content, whether it is for SEO (search engine optimization) or fresh, interesting articles for their website. You will sometimes need to take a test, and at the very least provide writing samples. It’s rare that a writing site does not require one or even both. The good news is that some sites are a little more lenient than others, so don’t be afraid of these requirements.

Pay Per Piece Writing Sites

Constant Content: This site provides “on spec” and “request-based” writing work. You either dream up an article and write it, hoping that someone buys it, or look at the requests coming in from buyers and write about the requested subject. Pay rate varies, but it looks like articles pay about $20 to $100 for 500 to 1,000 word articles. This is a legitimate, paying site. No scams here!

Textbroker: Here, you are paid by the word, and once again it varies. I signed up for them a long, long time ago, and I admittedly have not been on there much. You are rated on a scale from 1 to 5, 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. Most people start out at a 2 or 3 after taking their quiz. You won’t get a 4 or 5 until you’ve done work for them and are rated by their editors. This is a legitimate, paying site. In fact, they now pay weekly. Hooray!

Writers Domain: It looks like this site is not always hiring. Looks like the pay is not all that, somewhere around $3 per 250 to 300 words. Most are SEO articles, so you may want to brush up on those skills. Payout is once a month on the 5th. After you’ve received a total of $100 in payments from them, you can request a payout at any time. You must submit a writing sample and take a grammar quiz.
