Appen is a company that prides itself on hiring remote workers, all over the world. Formed in 2011 with the merger of Appen Pty Ltd. and the Butler Hill Group, it provides customer services in information collection, transcription, data annotation, search engine evaluation, and linguistic consulting in more than 120 languages and dialects. It’s one of the bigger companies where you can find ad rater jobs.

Types of Jobs Available

Crowdsourcing Jobs: These are Appen’s “micro-tasks.” (Read more about these types of jobs on my Micro-Tasks page.) They require no special training.

Search Engine Evaluation/Ad Rater Jobs: This position requires you to train and then pass their tests, which is unpaid and lasts anywhere from 25-40 hours (1-3 week period). You also need to be available at least 20 hours during the week, Monday to Friday. They are one of five companies I know of that hire Internet and ad raters.

Translators: They work with over 120 languages and dialects.

Some other jobs include transcription and data annotation.

Pay

You are considered an independent contractor for all positions. The Search Engine Evaluators and Data Annotators are paid $12 to $15 per hour, according to Glassdoor.com. Pay for Crowdsourcing is paid per task at $0.01 to $0.15. Pay is made bimonthly once you have reached $50. For all other types of work, I could not locate any data.

What Workers Say

There are varying opinions about working for Appen on Glassdoor.com. I’ve also seen mixed reviews over on the ad rater forum at WAHM.com and Workplacelikehome.com. Some people have good experiences, and some have horrible experiences. However, these reviews are for the Crowdsourcing and Search Engine Evaluation jobs. I didn’t see any for translation, transcription, or data annotation.

How to Apply

Navigate to the jobs application page at their website, click on “View Opportunities” and then choose “Remote/Global” under “Country” to bring up all of their work at home job openings. Hopefully they’ll have some ad rater jobs open for application. Good luck!
